Microsoft gets outside the box with software
10年も前にBill GatesらMS社の幹部は今までどおりの箱売りのSoftwareではなく、Internetを介して供給されるものであると結論づけたが、少々早すぎた。
といっても、これは単純にInternetからインストールをする類のものではなく、ソフトウェアそのものがインターネット上にあり、ブラウザー経由にて仕様できるソフトウェアを指し示している。
そしてようやくその時期がこようとしている。
Gates said Microsoft definitely considers Salesforce a rival and looks "intensely" at where that company is seeing success.
CRM（Customer Releation Management）サービスをインターネット上で提供するSalesforce.com社をライバルと目し、MS社が必ず成功を収めなければならない分野であるとGatesは言う。

と、あるように 私はしらなかったが、実はすでにMS社は”Office Outlook Live”なるものをリリースしており、ストレージスペースを月々あるいは年での使用料を払う形で提供している。
さて、このように様々なソフトがインターネット上にあるとなると、MS社の優位性は薄れるのではないだろうか？
OSとの半ば強制的なインストールを後ろ盾にOS以外のソフトを拡販するべく、司法の戦いを繰り広げながらも突き進んできたMS社だが、それがブラウザー経由で任意のサービスを選ぶとなると優位性が消し飛ぶことになる。
Another key question is how Microsoft might deliver future software-as-a-service products. Although Office Live and some other Microsoft products are delivered directly, the company has traditionally relied heavily on partners to sell and tailor its software.
But Gates and the analysts agreed that as there are definitely challenges, so too are there benefits.
そしてGatesもアナリストもそれはみとめつつも、同様に優位性もあると指摘する。
"Office has an opportunity to be a rich client for these applications," he said. Because Office is so widely employed, companies can use it as a familiar interface to connect to these online applications.

Wainewright pointed specifically to one way Microsoft is already doing that internally. In the company's Project Elixir, Microsoft is using Outlook as a means to view data from its third-party customer relationship management software.
（MS社は社内ですでにはじめているように） Outlookを使った個人情報管理システムを関係会社との連携に使うようにする方法もある。私が勤める会社もそうだが、Outlookにて会議を設定したり、相手のスケジュールを確認したりする為にはOutlook同士でないと具合が悪い。 MS社と共同開発などをしている会社はInterfaceをあわせる為に当然Outllookを使うであろう。

「次期OSに搭載されるIndigo（新しいネットワークAPI）なども助けになる」とあるが、まぁこれはMSだけにもたらされるメリットとはなりえまいが、当然自分のところで策定した規格であるから多少有利であろう。
